Donate Materials

The Family Cooperative is always in need of classroom materials that support young children’s thinking and learning.  We would love to receive "loose parts" as a donation.

What are Loose Parts?
  • Loose parts are materials that can be moved, carried, combined, redesigned, and used in multiple ways.
  • They are open-ended, meaning they don't have a specific purpose or function, allowing children to use their imagination and creativity to explore and play.
Examples of Loose Parts:
  • Natural: Sticks, stones, shells, leaves, pinecones, acorns, seeds, sand, moss, wood chips, and tree cookies.
  • Everyday: Cardboard boxes, buckets, baskets, crates, fabric scraps, ribbons, buttons, ropes, plastic bottles, and wooden blocks.

Why are Loose Parts Important?
  • Encourage Creativity and Imagination: Loose parts provide opportunities for children to express themselves and create their own worlds and stories.
  • Promote Problem-Solving: Children can use loose parts to solve problems, build structures, and explore different possibilities.
  • Develop Fine and Gross Motor Skills: Playing with loose parts requires children to manipulate objects, build, and explore, which helps develop their fine and gross motor skills.
  • Foster Social Interaction: Loose parts can be used in both solitary and group play, encouraging children to collaborate, communicate, and negotiate.
  • Connect with Nature: Natural loose parts can help children connect with the natural world and appreciate the beauty and wonder of nature.

An Important Note:

The Family Cooperative is an educational space for young children, and the materials in our classrooms reflect our learning and thinking goals.  As a result, we are looking only for educational materials, rather than household toys.

Some examples of donations that cannot be accepted are:

  • Commercially themed toys (Barbie, Polly Pocket, Disney Characters, Star Wars, Pokemon etc.)
  • Mechanized toys (anything that lights up, makes noise, etc.)
  • Video games or game systems
  • Incomplete toy sets
  • Coloring books
  • Classroom furniture will be evaluated and accepted based on our needs and the physical space available.
