In the Maple classroom, we believe that learning happens through play, and that play is in fact learning. We make space for authentic discovery and joy in the process of uncovering new ideas, basing our curriculum on observations of the children and our interpretations of what they are learning rather than a pre-determined idea about what they “should” be learning. Conflict and resolution play an important role in the Maple Room as children are actively encouraged to engage in problem solving and finding their own solutions. In our experience, it is important to balance both choice and clear boundaries in order for all children to feel safe, and to be able to fully participate in the life of the classroom.
